Ingredients

  • 4 large apples
  • 2 tbsp whole wheat flour
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2/3 cup old fashioned oats
  • 1/3 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup pecans or walnuts
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp fine sea salt
  • 4 tbsp cold unsalted butter

Steps

  1. Heat the oven to 375 F and grease a 9-inch square baking dish with cooking oil.
  2. Peel, core, and slice the apples, then toss them with 2 tablespoons flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla.
  3. Spread the apples in the dish and combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, pecans, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl.
  4. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture forms coarse crumbs, then sprinkle it over the apples.
  5. Bake for 45 minutes, then cool the crisp for 10 minutes before serving.
