Ingredients

  • 2 cups self-raising flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 5 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tbsp buttermilk (optional)

Steps

  1. Heat the oven to 425 F and grease a 9-by-13-inch baking pan with cooking oil.
  2. Whisk the flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Cut in the butter until the mixture has small, coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in the vanilla and buttermilk just until a soft dough forms.
  5. Drop 12 portions into the pan and brush them with the optional tablespoon of buttermilk.
  6. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes until the tops are lightly browned.
