Ingredients

  • 2 pie dough rounds
  • 8 sized granny smith apples
  • 1/2 cup salted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup + 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg (optional)
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 egg

Steps

  1. Heat the oven to 425 F and fit one dough round into a 9-inch pie plate.
  2. Peel and slice the apples, then toss them with the lemon juice, flour, sugars, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  3. Pour the apples into the crust, dot them with the butter, and cover them with the second dough round.
  4. Crimp the edges, cut several vents, and brush the top with the beaten egg.
  5. Bake at 425 F for 15 minutes, reduce the oven to 375 F, and bake for 35 minutes more.
  6. Cool the pie for 15 minutes before cutting.
