  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp instant coffee (optional)
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 6 tbsp milk
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 6 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 3/4 tsp vanilla extract

Steps

  1. Heat the oven to 350 F and grease a 10-by-15-inch sheet pan.
  2. Boil butter, water, and cocoa in a saucepan, then remove from the heat.
  3. Whisk flour, both sugars, baking soda, salt, and coffee if using, then stir in sour cream, eggs, and vanilla.
  4. Mix in the warm cocoa mixture, spread the batter in the pan, and bake for 20 to 24 minutes.
  5. Boil milk, butter, and cocoa in a saucepan, then remove from the heat and stir in powdered sugar and vanilla.
  6. Spread the warm frosting over the hot cake and cool for 10 minutes.
