Ingredients

1/2 cup butter
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg
1/4 scant cup molasses
1 1/2 scant cups unbleached all-purpose flour
1 pinch salt
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp each ground cinnamon and ginger
1/2 cup butter
2 3/4 cups powdered sugar
1 large orange
2 1/2 tbsp orange juice

Steps

Heat the oven to 350 F and line baking sheets with parchment.
Beat the butter and sugar, then mix in the egg and molasses.
Stir in the flour, salt, baking soda, cinnamon, and ginger until combined.
Drop small spoonfuls onto the sheets and bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until the cookies are firm.
Beat the remaining butter, powdered sugar, orange zest, and orange juice until smooth.
Cool the cookies completely, spread buttercream on half of them, and press the remaining cookies on top.
