6 oz semi-sweet chocolate
1 1/4 cups sugar
5 large eggs
4 large egg whites
1/8 tsp cream of tartar
3/4 cup sugar

Steps

Heat the oven to 350 F and lightly oil a 9-inch round cake pan.
Melt the butter and chocolate together in a saucepan over low heat, then stir until smooth.
Whisk in 1 1/4 cups sugar, the whole eggs, and cocoa powder until combined.
