Typical price: Salefork's estimate of an everyday US shelf price for each ingredient. Pick your city to price it from this week's ad.

The amounts listed are small for a full dinner, so this price per serving is likely low. Plan on a side or a bigger portion.

Ingredients

  • 2 lb ground beef
  • 1 cup diced yellow onion
  • 1/4 cup diced celery
  • 2 cans (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (15 oz) petite diced tomatoes
  • 1 can (4 oz) diced green chiles
  • 3 tbsp chili powder
  • 2 tsp ground cumin
  • 2 tsp salt (optional)
  • 1 tsp ground pepper
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 pinch sugar (optional)

Steps

  1. Brown the ground beef in a large pot over medium heat for 8 to 10 minutes, breaking it into small pieces until it reaches 160 F.
  2. Drain excess fat, then add the onion and celery and cook for 5 minutes until softened.
  3. Stir in the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, green chiles, water, chili powder, cumin, salt, pepper, and sugar.
  4. Bring the chili to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to low.
  5. Cover and simmer for 5 hours and 45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thick and hot.
