Ingredients

  • 40 large caramels or 46 small caramels
  • 2/3 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 package (18 1/2 oz) german chocolate cake mix
  • 3/4 cup melted butter
  • 6 oz chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Steps

  1. Heat the oven to 350 F and grease a 9-by-13-inch baking pan with cooking oil.
  2. Mix the cake mix, flour, and melted butter, then press half the dough into the pan and bake for 10 minutes.
  3. Melt the caramels with the evaporated milk in a saucepan over low heat for 8 minutes, stirring until smooth.
  4. Pour the caramel over the baked crust, then scatter the chocolate chips and optional nuts over it.
  5. Crumble the remaining dough over the top and bake for 20 minutes.
  6. Cool the bars in the pan for 30 minutes before cutting.
